Pacifica National Board Events of September 19, 2001

The Pacifica National Board held a conference call on September 19, 2001, for the purpose of electing new members. While this maneuver by the Board majority to bolster its dwindling numbers had been rejected by a judge in July, the same judge allowed it to happen in September.

For those with a lot of patience, here is a link to the official recording of the meeting press one of the “join” buttons to hear the recording, it lasts two hours and fourteen minutes.

Here's a direct link to the RealAudio file, in case they remove the link to it.

Update Here is a link to a Miscrosoft Word document with a summary of the “meeting”.

UpdateHere is a rough summary of the events of this “meeting” provided by Mr. Steve Freedkin of the Progressive Portal.

The following new members were added to the Pacifica National Board:

The following were immediately thereafter elected to the following offices, the above newly elected members voted for them.

While there will be more information coming to this page in the next hours and days it should be noted that all new members were immediately seated and allowed to vote.

Leslie Cagan, one of the “dissident” Board members made a motion that an emergency meeting of the Pacifica National Board be held in two weeks to discuss the crisis caused by Pacifica Management keeping Democracy Now! off the air. This motion passed, despite attempts by the Board majority to stop it. Interestingly, one of the stackees, George Barnstone, voiced his opinion that Democracy Now! should be gotten back on the air as soon as possible.

Before the meeting ended Valerie Chambers, one of the Board majority, voiced an opinion that the hiring of Utrice Leid as National Program Director needed to be looked into. At this time it is not known if Ms. Chambers is in favor of Ms. Leid's appointment or not.

This page will continue to be updated as we get more information.
