WBAI LSB Meeting — December 15, 2004

The twenty first WBAI Local Station Board (LSB) meeting was held on Wednesday, December 15, 2004, at 6:30 PM at the Harlem State Office Building in Manhattan. This is not an official Web page of the LSB.

WBAI Management provided a public address system and there were security guards present. One LSB member recorded what she could on a Mini-Disc again.

The faction currently in charge took charge at this meeting. The faction's slate, calling itself by the Orwellian name “Justice & Unity Campaign” won 5 of the 9 contested listener delegate seats and two of the three Staff delegate seats. When seated they had an absolute majority of 13 on the LSB.

They elected the following officers of the WBAI LSB:

Chair _____ Vajra Kilgour
Vice Chair _____ Mariana Gaston
Secretary _____ Berta Silva
Treasurer _____ Baruti Bediako

The Secretary and Treasurer are not LSB members. This is permitted by the Pacifica bylaws. One of the amusing moments of the meeting was when Mr. Bediako was nominated he began to give his acceptance speech. He had to be reminded that they needed to go through the formality of an election first.

As one of the the public comment sessions started the new Chair declared that there were not enough women on the line to speak and called for women to come to the head of the line. The woman who did was a Staff faction operative who hadn't even been on line.

The General Manager reported that the new LSB has taken over at a time when WBAI was on the road to financial stability. Perhaps this was his way of admitting that the station had not been financially stable heretofore. He also said that WBAI would have a surplus of $300,000 in the bank at the end of the year. The General Manager announced that he wants to move the station from its current Wall St. location and called for a serious search for this location in 2005.

One faction member attempted to introduce a gag rule for all LSB related on-line mailing lists, but this didn't get far.

The faction's motion to rescind the motion creating the General Manager Search Sub-committee (GMSS) from the November 30, 2004, LSB meeting passed. Their motion to create a new GMSS got caught up in their time wasting and we had to leave before it got voted on.

Here is the newsletter I wrote for the WBAI Staff about the December 15, 2004 LSB meeting
