Back of the Book — July 13, 2024

So we covered the below topics and a little more on this program. I'm hoping to add to this page a little bit over time, so checking back for updates might be worth it.

You can now listen to this program on the official WBAI Archive.

The next regular WBAI LSB meeting will be held on Wednesday August 14, 2024, at 7:00 PM. That meeting will be held on ZOOM, even though ZOOM compromises privacy and security.

Some years ago the WBAI LSB voted to hold its regular meetings on the second Wednesday of every month, subject to change by the LSB, so we have the following schedule:

These meetings are set to begin at 7:00 PM.

WBAI has a program schedule up on its Web site. The site has gotten many of the individual program pages together to provide links and such, so check it out.

Here is WBAI's current Internet stream. We can no longer tell if the stream is working without testing every possible stream. Good luck.

WBAI is archiving the programs! WBAI has permanently switched to yet another new archive Web page! This one is more baffling than the previous one. For some time I was unable to post archive blurbs, then I could, and then I couldn't again. Now I can again and there are a whole bunch of archive blurbs up there now.

This is a link to the latest version of the official WBAI archive. The archiving software appears to have been at least partially fixed. To get to the archive of this program you can use the usual method: you'll have to click on the drop-down menu, which says Display, and find Back of the Book on that menu. We're pretty early in the list, so it shouldn't be too difficult. Once you find the program name click GO and you'll see only this Back of the Book program. Management has fixed some problems that we'd been having with the archives.

For programs before March 23, 2019, we're all out of luck. The changes that took place once WBAI Management took control of the WBAI archives seems to have wiped out all access to anything before that date in March. You'll have to click on the same drop-down menu as above, which says Display, and find Specify Date, it's the second choice from the top. You are then given a little pop-up calendar and you can choose the date of the program there. Then click GO and you'll see a list of programs that aired on that date. For those previous programs you can get the audio, but nothing else, since I can't post anything to those pages anymore. Yeah, it looks like they'll have some alternating program's name prominently there, but if you have the right date it'll be our program. Good luck.

Since the General Manager has banned Sidney Smith from WBAI he's not alternating with us on the air. As of November 2020, Back of the Book airs weekly.

Bring Back Uncle Sidney!

Our friend, fellow WBAI producer and Saddle Pal Uncle Sidney Smith has been banned from WBAI by former General Manager Berthold Reimers. The General Manager will not say why. He won't even tell Sidney why he's banned! This is grossly unfair to Sidney and constitutes abuse of Staff. Why did Berthold ban Sidney?

Rudy Giuliani fool for rent
Rudy's New Job

Rudy Giuliani's case to get bankruptcy protection has been thrown out of court because the judge in the case was not forthcoming about his finances. Federal Bankruptcy Judge Sean Lane wrote in his decision, The lack of financial transparency is particularly troubling given concerns that Mr. Giuliani has engaged in self-dealing and that he has potential conflicts of interest that would hamper the administration of his bankruptcy case. Yeah, Giuliani is just trying to avoid being held accountable for his various crimes related to helping Donnie Bonespur Trump's attempt to negate the results of the 2020, election. I'm glad he's not being allowed to slither away from the wrongs he's done and the damage he's done to people's lives.

The judge continued, In fact, Mr. Giuliani's counsel conceded that there are not yet records regarding how money flows between Mr. Giuliani and his wholly owned corporate entities, Yeah, I bet. the ruling also said, Mr. Giuliani's counsel also stated that Mr. Giuliani has not been able to retain any bookkeeper or accountant to work on his behalf … In the Court's experience, such a fact is highly unusual and troubling given that the bankruptcy case has been pending for more than six months.

Giuliani is getting sued all over the place, literally. There are a number of lawsuits pending against him, but he's already been found guilty of slandering two Georgia election workers, Ruby Freeman and Wandrea Shaye Moss, when he accused them of ballot fraud, drug use and other crimes. As a result of that trial he was ordered to pay $148 million for making their lives hell, and exposing them to the death threats and other actions of the MAGA nuts to whom Giuliani played. Of course Trump has left Giuliani twisting in the wind.

It's good that this high profile Trump aligned thug is at least getting financially hit. What he subjected those two women to was horrendous and he used all of the powers Trump gave him to do damage to them, and he had to have known that his charges were bogus. Keep in mind that Giuliani was a Federal Prosecutor for nine years. He knows what evidence of a crime looks like. He understands the rules of evidence as stipulated by federal law, he knows how to prosecute real cases. So when he starts claiming that crimes have been committed it sure looks to a lot of people like he must be right, with all of that experience. So the fact that the two women committed no crimes at all means that he was knowingly making stuff up. Meanwhile Giuliani is going to get prosecuted in Georgia on racketeering charges and in that case Donnie Bonespur Trump and 17 other MAGA operatives will also face trial for allegedly trying to overturn the results of the 2020, presidential election by messing with the process related to Georgia's Electoral College votes. That one is a criminal trial.

sars-cov-2 virus with a Guy Fawkes mask
COVID-19 Death Toll Slightly Higher

The CDC Web site seems to be saying that the death toll in America for the past week was 147, which is a jump from last week's total of about 80. Pickles of the North and I are not wearing our masks as much at this point, and we are thinking about waiting for the new booster vaccinations to come out in the Fall to get one. Pickles noted that the amount of the SARS-CoV-19 virus in wastewater was higher too. That's one thing which no one can fake, or hide.

Starliner docked at the International Space Station
The Starliner Docked at the ISS

So Butch Gilmore and Suni Williams are still stuck on the ISS, although NASA and Boing say that they are not stuck up there. They went up there on a Boeing Starliner spacecraft on June 5, and they were supposed to come back on June 22. The spacecraft is still leaking helium and having other technical problems, and the two astronauts will remain on the ISS while Boeing and NASA engineers try to figure out how to fix a series the Boeing Starliner spacecraft. This first Starliner mission with a crew on it is certainly historic. I hope that they get down safely, of course, but Boing is certainly having problems with their products these days.

Former Senator Jim Inhofe
Anti-Science Homophobe

Former Senator and all around bad guy Jim Inhofe, died at the age of 89 this week. He had been a United States Senator for quite a while and his career marked by his fights against climate science. In 1994, when he was first elected to the Senate he ran on a platform that was largely about, as he put it, God, guns and gays. He was infamous for his insipid incident of February 2015, when he threw a snowball on the Senate floor. There had been a snowstorm and he went out and picked up some snow, brought it to the Senate floor and started talking about how the presence of snow proved that there was no global warming or climate change. He was one of the Republican Party's most vocal critics of environmental regulation, and so as chair of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee he had a lot of clout in the area and he could work sabotage on a number of fronts. After he left the Senate his staffers went on to be a big part of Trump regime's Environmental Protection Agency. In 2012, he wrote a book titled The Greatest Hoax: How the Global Warming Conspiracy Threatens Your Future which earned him the 2012, Rubber Dodo Award for general scientific ignorance. The Rubber Dodo was awarded by a group called the Center for Biological Diversity. Inhofe's anti-science positions came from his belief that his god controlled the climate and so humans burning fossil fuels could not alter that. A real idiot and an anti-gay bigot.

There are a lot of issues that are considered hazardous to talk about on the air at WBAI, even though the gag rule was lifted in 2002. However, there is the Internet! There are mailing lists which you can subscribe to and Web based message boards devoted to WBAI and Pacifica issues. Many controversial WBAI/Pacifica issues are discussed on these lists.

One open list that no longer exists was the WBAI-specific Goodlight Web based message board. It was sometimes referred to on Back of the Book as the bleepin' blue board, owing to the blue background that was used on its Web pages. This one had many people posting anonymously and there was also an ancillary WBAI people board that was just totally out of hand.

In June 2012, I ended up having to salvage the bleepin' blue board, and so I was the moderator on it for its last seven years, until it got too expensive.

Sometimes we used to have live interaction with people posting on the Goodlight Board during the program.

Our very own Uncle Sidney Smith, whose program Saturday Morning With the Radio On used to alternate with us, has a blog these days. You can reach his blog here.

There used to be a number of mailing lists related to Pacifica and WBAI. Unfortunately, they were all located on Yahoo! Groups. When Yahoo! Groups was totally shut down in December 2020, all of those mailing lists ceased to exist. One year earlier their file sections and archives of E-mails, had been excised leaving only the ability to send E-mails back and forth among the members. Now it's all gone. Older Back of the Book program Web pages tell a little more about those lists.

We like to stay interactive with our listeners. Here are the various options for you to get in touch with us.
